Teaching is "heart work," and we appreciate the enthusiasm and positivity our staff bring to our classrooms every day!

Dear CRES Community,

We hope this letter finds you filled with the same warmth and appreciation that you have shown our incredible staff during our combined Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. Your kindness and support have truly touched our hearts, and we cannot thank you enough for recognizing the hard work and dedication of our educators and staff members.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our PTA for their invaluable support and coordination of a myriad of treats! Their dedication made this week an exceptional celebration that included breakfast snacks, a luncheon, a coffee bar, and a raffle--among other goodies! Thank you, PTA, for your tireless efforts in making our school community feel valued.

Once again, we extend our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your ongoing support and for making Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week truly memorable. We appreciate our families so much!

Warmly,

Dr. Hertzberg, Ms. Wu, Ms. Baugh, Ms. Helmer, and Ms. Ford

Volume 2, Issue 24; May 6, 2024

Thank you, Centre Ridge teachers and staff, for inspiring a love of learning every day!

Dear CRES Community,

As we welcome Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, we want to take a moment to express our profound gratitude for the incredible dedication and hard work of our educators and staff members here at Centre Ridge.

From the moment our children step into their classrooms, to the time they leave each day, our faculty goes above and beyond to ensure a nurturing and enriching learning environment. Their unwavering commitment to our students' growth and well-being is truly commendable and deserves to be celebrated!

We encourage you to join us in recognizing Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week from May 6th-10th. There are many ways you can show your gratitude: a heartfelt note of thanks, a small gift, or a simple gesture of kindness. Your generosity and thoughtfulness will undoubtedly brighten their week and serve as a testament to the profound impact they have on your children's lives.

Once again, thank you for your continued partnership and support. Together, we can honor the remarkable individuals who play a pivotal role in guiding our students toward a bright and promising future!

Warmly,

Dr. Hertzberg, Ms. Wu, Ms. Baugh, Ms. Helmer, and Ms. Ford

School Attendance: Make Every Minute Count!

To reward our families and students who continue to prioritize attendance, we will be raffling off $50.00 gift cards to Giant (Thank you, PTA!), as well as swag that has been gifted to us by Liberty Middle School and Centreville High School! We even have mini Ronnie Rams to give away!

All students will be entered into the raffle who have missed fewer than 10 days of school this year, and who arrive at school on time, every day. We will begin our tardy count today through the end of the year. Students who are participating in attendance recovery can be included if they are able to mitigate enough days to meet this criteria. (A TalkingPoints message was sent last night as a reminder.)

Let's make every minute of learning count until the last day of school!

🩹 Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

Immunizations are required for all students entering 7th and 12th grades this fall. Visit the FCPS immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.  Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

Twelfth grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine. Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

Students can also fill out the attached sheet to give to their teachers. Make sure to have your student find out their teacher's favorite color so they can wear it for "Favorite Color Friday!"

There is still much to be done. Let's not lose sight of our goals. Let's finish strong!

Dear CRES Community,

We have had a wonderful start to April and are full "spring" ahead as we continue our momentum in this fourth quarter of school!

In order to ensure success for every student, daily attendance continues to be an imperative. Thank you to all our families who attended our Town Hall meeting and received our message regarding chronic absenteeism. Every missed hour of school matters. We are invested in your children and are able to make consistent progress when our students are in school.

If you would like to review the important content of our meeting, please watch the recording on our YouTube channel. We have every intention of reducing chronic absenteeism to less than 10% at Centre Ridge, and your partnership with these efforts will help make this goal a reality!

Warmly,

Dr. Hertzberg, Ms. Wu, Ms. Baugh, Ms. Helmer, and Ms. Ford

Showing Up Matters for R.E.A.L.

It is an opportunity to build Routines, increase Engagement, provide Access to resources, and support Learning!

Dear CRES Community,

As you may be aware, chronic absenteeism refers to students missing 10% or more of the school year for any reason, including excused and unexcused absences. While attendance is crucial for academic success and student well-being, we understand that various factors can impact a child's ability to attend school regularly.

It is with a sense of urgency and commitment that we address this issue head-on. Our school has been identified by the federal government as having a significant number of students who meet the criteria for chronic absenteeism. While this designation presents us with challenges, it also serves as a call to action for us to come together as a community to support our students and families in overcoming barriers to regular attendance. While this issue impacts students across all subgroups, our Hispanic subgroup is most prominently impacted.

To address this significant concern, we will continue our comprehensive plan to address chronic absenteeism and promote positive attendance habits among our students. This plan includes:

  1. Data Analysis and Monitoring: We will continue to closely monitor attendance data to identify trends and patterns among our students. We will tailor interventions to meet the specific needs of our students and families.

  2. Family Engagement: We will continue our outreach to families to provide support and resources to help overcome barriers to attendance, such as transportation issues, health concerns, or other challenges.

  3. Intervention Strategies: We will continue to create personalized attendance plans and incentives for maintained and improved attendance.

  4. Community Partnerships: We will collaborate with community organizations to provide wraparound support for students and families facing challenges related to attendance.

  5. Promoting a Positive School Culture: We will continue to foster a positive and inclusive school culture where students feel valued, supported, and motivated to attend school regularly. Through engaging curriculum, meaningful relationships, and extracurricular activities, we aim to create a school environment that promotes a love of learning and a desire to be present.

To this end, we invite every family to attend our Town Hall on April 3rd, at 6:30 pm, in our cafeteria. You will hear from school administration, team members from The Office of School Support, and our Region 4 leadership. Our community has the option to attend online or in-person, and synchronous translation support will be provided for those who attend in-person. Please RSVP so we can best prepare for your participation.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership with this important endeavor and for prioritizing your children's education.

Warmly,

Dr. Hertzberg, Ms. Wu, Ms. Baugh, Ms. Helmer, and Ms. Ford

🤧 Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

Volume 2, Issue 20; March 11, 2024

See below for a few time management tips to help you and your family capitalize on daylight savings time!

Dear CRES Community,

The shift to daylight savings time often brings about changes in our daily routines and internal body clocks, which can affect children in various ways. Here are a few key points to consider:

  1. Sleep Patterns: The time change can disrupt your child's sleep patterns, leading to difficulty falling asleep or waking up earlier than usual. It's important to be patient and understanding during this transition period as their bodies adjust to the new schedule.

  2. Energy Levels: With the onset of longer daylight hours, your child may experience changes in their energy levels throughout the day. Some may feel more energized and alert, while others may need more time to adapt to the shift.

  3. Emotional Well-being: Changes in sleep patterns and daily routines can also impact your child's emotional well-being. They may feel more irritable or tired than usual as they acclimate to the time change.

To support your child during this transition, here are a few practical strategies you can implement at home:

  • Establish Consistent Bedtime Routines: Help your child maintain consistent bedtime routines to promote healthy sleep habits. Encourage relaxation activities before bedtime, such as reading or listening to calming music.

  • Encourage Physical Activity: Engage your child in physical activities during the day to help them expend excess energy and promote better sleep at night.

  • Monitor Screen Time: Limit your child's exposure to screens, particularly in the evening, as the blue light emitted by electronic devices can disrupt sleep patterns.

By being mindful of the impact of daylight savings time on your child and implementing these strategies, you can support your child's overall well-being.

We look forward to seeing all students well-rested and ready for school this week!

Warmly,

Dr. Hertzberg, Ms. Wu, Ms. Baugh, Ms. Helmer, and Ms. Ford

  📊FCPS Budget

Did you know Virginia provides less funding per student than many neighboring states including Maryland, Kentucky, and West Virginia? This is about $1,900 per student in state underfunding of Virginia’s students and $345 million for FCPS.

In July 2023, results were released from a study that was requested by the Virginia General Assembly to understand the costs of education in Virginia and the Standards of Quality funding formula.

This Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) study revealed that on average, school districts in other states get 14% more funding per student than in Virginia, even after considering the differences in labor costs between states. This means that localities (like Fairfax County) go above and beyond in local funding to make up for state funding shortfalls.

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are [designated areas within a school or on school premises] for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact [the principal/family liaison/their child’s teacher] regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. On your mark, get set...read! The Read-a-Thon is here!

Dear CRES Community,

Literacy is the cornerstone of academic success and lifelong learning. At Centre Ridge Elementary School, we are dedicated to fostering a love of literacy at school and at home!

Therefore, we are thrilled to invite you to our upcoming "Rams Read Like Champions!" family literacy night on Thursday, March 7th--an event designed to celebrate the joy of reading and equip families with tools to support literacy at home. During this event, families will engage in discussion and interactive activities aimed at promoting structured literacy. Through explicit instruction, structured literacy equips students with the necessary tools to become proficient readers and writers, empowering students to decode words accurately, comprehend text fluently, and express themselves effectively in written form.

Additionally, this week, we are launching our PTA sponsored Read-a-Thon where students will not only enhance their reading skills, but also foster a sense of community and teamwork. The Read-A-Thon will start Monday, March 4th and run through Friday, March 15th. Like last year, our ultimate goal is to raise funds--$20,000--all of which will go to support innovative learning experiences and resources for Centre Ridge students and families! More importantly, we want all students to participate, have fun, and know that their time and efforts count, too! By logging their minutes, every student can contribute to their individual and overall classroom minutes, and have the opportunity to win prizes! All students are eligible to win prizes based on the minutes of reading they log, not the funds they raise. To get started, register your child on 99pledges!

Again, as partners in your child's education, we encourage you to join us for "Rams Read Like Champions Night," on March 7th, to actively engage in learning about literacy with your child. In the meantime, on your mark, get set...read!

Warmly,

Dr. Hertzberg, Ms. Wu, Ms. Baugh, Ms. Helmer, and Ms. Ford

Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

FCPS does not have the authority to impose taxes and may only charge fees where the Commonwealth of Virginia has granted specific authority. Learn more about FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget.

Look for the FCPS Family Engagement Survey This Sunday

Parents/caregivers, you should have received the FCPS Family Engagement Survey on Sunday from independent research firm K12 Insight. Get on the path to being college and career ready!

Dear CRES Community,

Did you know that February is also Career and Technical Education Month?

As we continue to nurture the academic growth and future aspirations of our students, we are excited to highlight the connection between AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) and Career and Technical Education (CTE) within our school community.

AVID, a program dedicated to preparing students for college and career success, aligns seamlessly with the principles and opportunities offered through Career and Technical Education. By fostering critical thinking, collaboration, organization, and inquiry skills, AVID empowers students to excel academically while preparing them for the diverse pathways available in both higher education and the workforce.

In line with our dedication to promoting college and career readiness, we are thrilled to announce that our school will be hosting a College and Career Week, culminating in a College and Career Fair for our students on March 22nd! This exciting event will provide our students with the chance to interact with professionals from diverse industries, learn about different career pathways, and explore post-secondary education options. We believe that events like these play a crucial role in inspiring and empowering our students to envision their futures and set ambitious goals for themselves.

We invite you to join us in supporting and encouraging our students as they embark on this journey of exploration and discovery. By instilling in them a sense of curiosity, determination, and resilience, we can help pave the way for their success in both their academic endeavors and future careers.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in our shared mission of preparing our students for a bright and promising future!

Warmly,

DedicatED: For Parents and Teachers Portrait of a Graduate Skills at Centre Ridge!

In February, we focused on being a communicator. We practiced: “I speak so others can understand me,” and “I listen and ask questions so I can understand.” We practiced these skills through morning meeting greetings and activities.

Here’s what it might look like in your child’s classroom:

  • Facing the speaker
  • Giving your attention to the speaker

Here’s what it might sound like in your child’s classroom:

  • Asking questions for understanding and clarity (e.g.,: What do you mean by that? Why do you think that?)
  • Speaking clearly

You can practice these skills at home by:

  • Encouraging your student to listen to the person speaking by facing the speaker and giving their full attention
  • Responding to the speaker with a question or comment that is on topic

Tomorrow is National Random Acts of Kindness Day!

Dear CRES Community,

At Centre Ridge Elementary, we are excited to continue our journey celebrating the spirit of kindness throughout this special month.

February is more than just a month marked by Valentine's Day; it is a time when we come together to reflect on the importance of kindness, compassion, and empathy. As a community, we recognize the profound impact that acts of kindness can have on our students' lives and the world around us.

Throughout this month, our school is focusing on various activities aimed at nurturing a culture of kindness and empathy among our students and staff. From classroom discussions and read-alouds, to interactive projects and service opportunities, we aim to inspire our young learners to embrace kindness as a way of life.

We encourage you to join us in this journey by engaging in conversations about kindness at home and reinforcing the values of empathy and compassion with your children. Whether it is a simple act of kindness toward a classmate, a heartfelt note of appreciation, or a thoughtful gesture toward a neighbor, every action, no matter how small, contributes to creating a more compassionate and inclusive community.

Together, we play a crucial role in shaping the values and character of the next generation. Let us strive to instill the importance of kindness, not just in February, but every day of the year.

Warmly,

Dr. Hertzberg, Ms. Wu, Ms. Baugh, Ms. Helmer, and Ms. Ford

Fiscal Year 2025 Proposed Budget Focused on Educational Excellence and Competitive Compensation

At the last School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid proposed a budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 that focuses on excellence and providing students an equitable education in an inclusive and respectful environment, where access, opportunity, and achievement are available to all.

The budget also prioritizes competitive compensation to attract and retain a world-class workforce.

The FY 2025 Proposed Budget totals $3.8 billion, an increase of $301.8 million, or 8.6%, over the FY 2024 Approved Budget. Nearly 86% of the budget is focused on instruction. Key highlights include:

  • Supporting students academically by maintaining existing class size formulas and providing necessary support to all students.
  • Retaining and attracting world-class educators with a 6% market scale adjustment.
  • Strengthening student well-being outside of the classroom with expanded athletics offerings, additional athletic trainers, and enhanced stipends for fine and performing arts.
  • Continuing initiatives including expansion of inclusive preschool, adoption of green initiatives, and funding assistant director of student activities positions previously funded with ESSER III.

Special education daily contract extensions, funding for the safety and security screening program, and late buses to support academics and activities at middle schools are several of the priorities to be addressed at the end of FY 2024.

The School Board is scheduled to adopt the Advertised Budget on Thursday, February 22nd. Read more about the proposed budget. Keep up with FCPS’ budget development process

DedicatED: For Parents and Teachers Nurturing Kindness: Try Our Simple Recipe

Excerpted from The Family Dinner Project

The ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, or consider the impact of your actions on another person, or attempt to lighten the load for someone who is having a hard day by offering a smile or an ear, are all ways we demonstrate kindness. They are also all qualities that can be learned and reinforced at home—even at the dinner table. Here’s how:

Be a role model for empathy.

The dinner table can be an ideal incubator for modeling empathy. A simple way to do this is to ensure that everyone who wants to gets a turn to talk, and then everyone else listens so the speaker feels that his or her words and experience matter. This means that eye contact is made with the person who is speaking, only one person speaks at a time, and you occasionally register that you understand how your child or spouse is feeling.

Emphasize the positive.

When children share stories at the table about their days, you might point out and praise acts of kindness shown toward siblings, friends, pets, and others. By highlighting these acts, you are positively reinforcing your child in making good choices! You can also ask them to point out nice things others have done for them recently, and of course share your own stories of kindness—both given and received— from the day.

Perform a kindness mission.

Surprise a friend, or a neighbor or even a charity by doing something thoughtful. You can brainstorm ideas at dinner, or you can use the kid-friendly suggestions we offer in The Family Breakfast Project to give your kids a kindness mission for the day and then have them report back at dinner. Another variation of this idea might be to put all family member’s names in a jar and have each person choose someone they will do something nice for that day.

For more information on how to foster kindness with kids, check out this article about using a kindness jar!

Rams read like champions!

Dear CRES Community,

As the excitement of the Super Bowl fills the air this evening and fans gather to cheer on their favorite teams, it reminds us of the power of coming together to celebrate shared passions and accomplishments. It reminds us of teamwork, dedication, and perseverance!

Just like the athletes on the field, our students embark on their own journey toward success in school each day, with literacy as their guiding force. Just as every touchdown is a testament to skill, strategy, and teamwork, every page turned, and every word mastered, is a triumph for our young readers and writers.

As we reflect on the excitement of the Super Bowl, let us also celebrate the joy and power of literacy in our students' lives. Let us continue to support their love of reading and writing, encouraging them to reach new heights and pursue their dreams with passion and determination. We invite you to join us for our upcoming Family Literacy Night: Rams Read Like Champions! RSVP here so we can plan accordingly for your participation.

Together, we can champion our students to embrace a lifelong love of literacy!

Warmly,

Dr. Hertzberg, Ms. Wu, Ms. Baugh, Ms. Helmer, and Ms. Ford

📚 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend an information night on Monday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Thoreau Middle School. Parents/caregivers will learn more about Lexia, and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom and supporting student growth in reading. Attendees will also get tips for supporting their students at home.

Register to attend or submit a question in advance. Unable to attend in person? Join on Zoom

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, the FCPS Equitable Access to Literacy plan, and FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

AVID in Action!

Students in Ms. Evans' fourth grade class are introduced to binders, an organizational tool that will help them organize their learning, access their notes, and reinforce strong study skills across multiple content areas. Our Academic Dean, Ms. Ford, supports our teachers and students with these efforts!

DedicatED: For Parents and Teachers

AVID is for all students!

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an educational approach that empowers all students, regardless of background or academic ability, to achieve academic success and prepare for college and career readiness. AVID provides students with the skills, strategies, and support they need to excel academically, emphasizing critical thinking, inquiry, collaboration, and organization.

With regard to note-taking, AVID encourages students to use structured methods, such as the AVID Focused Note-Taking Process, to actively engage with content, organize information effectively, and develop strong study habits. By implementing AVID principles, students learn how to become self-directed learners, develop a growth mindset, and navigate academic challenges with confidence, setting them on a path toward lifelong success.

At Centre Ridge, we are amping up our AVID efforts! Teachers in 3rd-6th grade will be implementing AVID strategies next year, with our 6th grade team attending the national conference in Orlando, Florida this summer! We are so excited to see how this approach will positively impact our students' educational journeys!

Volume 2, Issue 15; February 4, 2024

On February 2nd, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow. According to folklore, that means we will see an early spring this year!

Happy Groundhog's Day, from Phil's "Instafamous" Cousin, Chunk Jr.!

Dear CRES Community,

We hope that you are enjoying this wonderful weather this weekend! So far, it seems like the groundhog is right. It will be an early spring!

This past week, we hosted two community conversations. These informal meetings provided a valuable opportunity to address your questions and discuss matters that are vital to student welfare and learning.

Throughout the conversations, we explored various topics and concerns, reflecting our collective dedication to fostering a supportive and nurturing environment for all students. Your input and perspectives help us better understand the needs of our community and inform our efforts to enhance student success.

Presently, we are exploring innovative ways to reimagine our service delivery model for instruction to ensure it remains inclusive and responsive to the needs of all learners, including those in our advanced academic program. By embracing new approaches and leveraging the latest research and best practices, we aim to create an enriched learning environment that fosters the growth and development of every student. Your input and collaboration are integral as we work together to shape the future of our academic programs to better serve the diverse needs of our community.

Please RSVP here if you are interested in being a part of our online or in-person focus groups that will explore potential instructional approaches for students in grades 3 through 6. At this time, we are interested in determining how many families would like to participate so that we can begin to prepare for these guided discussions. A date will be confirmed and shared with you in our next newsletter.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Warmly,

Dr. Hertzberg, Ms. Wu, Ms. Baugh, Ms. Helmer, and Ms. Ford

Dear CRES Community,

As part of our commitment to ensuring the best possible educational experience for your child, we are writing to inform you about an important matter regarding student absences.

In early February, a letter will be mailed home notifying you about your child's absences from school. We understand that there can be various reasons for student absences, including illness, family emergencies, and other unavoidable circumstances. However, consistent attendance is crucial for your child's academic progress and overall well-being.

Each day of instruction contributes to your child's academic growth and development. Therefore, we kindly request your cooperation in prioritizing regular attendance and minimizing unnecessary absences.

If your child is experiencing any challenges that may affect their attendance or academic performance, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Our school counselors, teachers, and administrative staff are here to support you and your child in any way we can.

Stay tuned! We are about to unveil several engagement initiatives and incentives aimed at encouraging all families to join us in our mission to boost student attendance.

DedicatED: For Parents and Teachers What’s Executive Function—and Why Does It Matter?

The skills that make up executive function are better predictors of success than test scores, IQ, or socioeconomic status.

Executive function allows children to improve their abilities to stay focused, plan ahead, regulate their emotions, and think flexibly and creatively.

Cultivating these skills, the research suggests, should be a priority from elementary school through high school—and perhaps even into college—and executive function remains one of the most reliable predictors of success in academics and in life...
